I say that to Dad and he says that it's the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again.(p2)
Tonight we howl at the star-clusted sky. We throw our voices and shape them and mix them and mould them like clay. We can stretch our sounds so that they reach the very tops of our tallest trees and clown to the secret-filled earth and so that they tangle in the brambles and skim across the poud because this world is ours and we are alone. Just us.(p7)
October is the best month when you live in the woods and maybe when you don't, but I woundn't know. It's when the trees are starting to shake leaves on to a patchwork floor and the ground is bright as fire.(p17)
He never says my name once when he can say it twice, like it's the words to a song and the sound rises like music.(p24)
I feel small and crushed by the architecture and stamped down by the wall of sound that spills from every angle and demolished by the scents that whip around me.(p43)
Her eyes are huge and round in her head and they are the colour of the darkest liquidy night. They are full moons when she's looking at you and they're crescents when she's sleepy or thinking.(p55)
Scavenging feels like freedom. I am a mudlarker child sprung from history. I am a wild animal skulking and prowling for food. I am a pirate hunting for treasure.(p219)
October, October, sometimes it's a kindness to let something go even when you love it very much.(p227)
You know who your dad is. He knows who you are. You know every moment of your lives together. You know each other's stories and you both know he doesn't need a story to love you so very much in this very real world of ours, and he will never ever let you go or give you up.(p254)
It is my story and it is our story and it isn't perfect and it isn't finished but it is whole.(p268)
He needs the trees and the call of the birds and the wide open air stretching his lungs.(p274)
It feels like our tiny universe has been sliced open for the first time and the outside is starting to spill in.(p281)
I can be a pair and I can be alone and I complete myself and many other people complete me too.(p287)
