1. I feel the lure of nature, the desire to exchange sitting in traffic for walking by the sea. I want to have a garden and spend time cultivating it.(p2) 2. And I lie there, surrounded by boxes, looking up at the half-filled shelves, at the books that have followed me from place to place, I find my answer. I will be my own doctor and prescribe the best medicine: a course of rereading.(p2) 3. Reading built me and always has the power to put me back together again.(P3) 4. ‘I know! I will make her a reader.’ And so she waved her wand and sealed my fate, and gave me a gift that has brightened my days, expanded my horizons, and kept me company through the darkest hours. 5. Most people apart from my parents told me what I wasn’t allowed to do. Books, on the other hand, urged me on. There were no limits.

I don’t think I realized that some books were supposed to be better than others, and I had no concept of highbrow versus lowbrow.(p45) 3. I have never fully understood why I enjoy mysteries so much – maybe it’s something to do with order being restored by the end.(p48)

1. I already knew that one small village could teach you everything you needed to know about life, because that was how Miss Marple was so wise.(p53) 2. I yearned for excitement and adventure – not just because I wanted to live, but because I wanted to have things to write about.(p55) 3. This would – ever so slightly, like a tiny chink of sunlight through dark clouds – cheer me just enough to get up and on into the day.(p63) 4. There wasn’t a specific book that helped me survive that time; it was more the act of reading itself that become a life raft, allowing me to stay afloat and keep my head above the water.(p64) 5. …I still found real-life relationships much harder to comprehend than those in books. Books were so forgiving and kept me company without making demands. Sometimes they changed my worldview…(p69)
