Chapter 1 – The Worst Birthday Dudley had said the very thing Harry had been thinking himself … maybe he didn’t have any friends at Hogwarts … 2025-04-03 21:54:23 ‘Jiggery pokery!’ said Harry in a fierce voice. ‘Hocus pocus … squiggly wiggly …’ 2025-04-03 21:52:41 Underage wizards weren’t allowed to use magic outside school. 2025-04-03 21:48:29 Harry left through the back door. It was a brilliant, sunny day. He crossed the lawn, slumped down on the garden bench and sang under his breath, ‘Happy birthday to me … happy birthday to me …’ 2025-04-03 21:47:21 This was too much for both Aunt Petunia and Harry. Aunt Petunia burst into tears and hugged her son, while Harry ducked under the table so they wouldn’t see him laughing. 2025-04-03 21:43:52 and somehow – nobody understood why – Voldemort’s powers had been destroyed the instant he had failed to kill Harry. 2025-04-03 21:35:59 Harry, on the other hand, was small and skinny, with brilliant green eyes and jet-black hair that was always untidy. He wore round glasses, and on his forehead was a thin, lightning-shaped scar. 2025-04-03 21:31:58 Harry looked nothing like the rest of the family. 2025-04-03 21:31:52 The Dursleys were what wizards called Muggles (not a drop of magical blood in their veins) and as far as they were concerned, having a wizard in the family was a matter of deepest shame. 2025-04-03 21:18:43 He missed Hogwarts so much it was like having a constant stomach ache. He missed the castle, with its secret passageways and ghosts, his lessons (though perhaps not Snape, the Potions master), the post arriving by owl, eating banquets in the Great Hall, sleeping in his four-poster bed in the tower dormitory, visiting the gamekeeper, Hagrid, in his cabin in the grounds next to the Forbidden Forest and, especially, Quidditch, the most popular sport in the wizarding world (six tall goalposts, four flying balls and fourteen players on broomsticks). 2025-04-03 21:15:54 Ever since Harry had come home for the summer holidays, Uncle Vernon had been treating him like a bomb that might go off at any moment, because Harry wasn’t a normal boy. As a matter of fact, he was as not normal as it is possible to be. 2025-04-03 21:04:59 belch 打嗝 2025-04-03 20:47:34

Chapter 2 – Dobby's Warning She ruffled her feathers and gave him a look of deep disgust. 2025-04-03 22:27:56 Harry Potter asks if he can help Dobby … Dobby has heard of your greatness, sir, but of your goodness, Dobby never knew …’ 2025-04-03 22:12:01 Sit down,’ said Harry politely, pointing at the bed.To his horror, the elf burst into tears – very noisy tears.‘S-sit down!’ he wailed. ‘Never … never ever …’Harry thought he heard the voices downstairs falter.‘I’m sorry,’ he whispered, ‘I didn’t mean to offend you or anything.’‘Offend Dobby!’ choked the elf. ‘Dobby has never been asked to sit down by a wizard – like an equal –’ 2025-04-03 22:00:11 Harry noticed that it was wearing what looked like an old pillowcase, with rips for arm and leg holes. 2025-04-03 21:57:37 Chapter 3 – The Burrow ‘It’s a bit small,’ said Ron quickly. ‘Not like that room you had with the Muggles. And I’m right underneath the ghoul in the attic, he’s always banging on the pipes and groaning …’But Harry, grinning widely, said, ‘This is the best house I’ve ever been in.’Ron’s ears went pink. 2025-04-05 14:07:29 Bless them, they’ll go to any lengths to ignore magic, even if it’s staring them in the face … 2025-04-05 14:00:03 At that moment, there was a diversion in the form of a small, red-headed figure in a long nightdress, who appeared in the kitchen, gave a small squeal, and ran out again. 2025-04-05 11:33:10 She flicked her wand casually at the washing-up in the sink, which began to clean itself, clinking gently in the background. 2025-04-05 11:32:23 The clock on the wall opposite him had only one hand and no numbers at all. Written around the edge were things like ‘Time to make tea’, ‘Time to feed the chickens’ and ‘You’re late’. 2025-04-04 23:37:42 All three of Mrs Weasley’s sons were taller than she was, but they cowered as her rage broke over them. 2025-04-04 23:35:40 Lower and lower went the flying car. The edge of a brilliant red sun was now gleaming through the trees. 2025-04-04 23:31:59 A faint pinkish glow was visible along the horizon to the east. 2025-04-04 23:31:33

Chapter 3 – The Burrow Yeah, Dad’s mad about everything to do with Muggles, our shed’s full of Muggle stuff. 2025-04-04 23:30:41 Draco Malfoy made Dudley Dursley look like a kind, thoughtful and sensitive boy. 2025-04-04 23:26:40 Harry couldn’t believe it – he was free. He wound down the window, the night air whipping his hair, and looked back at the shrinking rooftops of Privet Drive. Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia and Dudley were all hanging, dumbstruck, out of Harry’s window. 2025-04-03 22:47:43 ‘A lot of wizards think it’s a waste of time, knowing this sort of Muggle trick,’ said Fred, ‘but we feel they’re skills worth learning, even if they are a bit slow.’ 2025-04-03 22:43:54 ‘Stop gibbering,’ said Ron, ‘we’ve come to take you home with us.’‘But you can’t magic me out either –’‘We don’t need to,’ said Ron, jerking his head towards the front seats and grinning. ‘You forget who I’ve got with me.’ 2025-04-03 22:41:55

Chapter 4 – At Flourish and Blotts ‘Leave him alone, he didn’t want all that!’ said Ginny. It was the first time she had spoken in front of Harry. She was glaring at Malfoy. 2025-04-05 21:50:56 Bill was the oldest Weasley brother. He and the next brother, Charlie, had already left Hogwarts. Harry had never met either of them, but knew that Charlie was in Romania, studying dragons, and Bill in Egypt, working for the wizards’ bank, Gringotts. 2025-04-05 14:21:19 What Harry found most unusual about life at Ron’s, however, wasn’t the talking mirror or the clanking ghoul: it was the fact that everybody there seemed to like him. 2025-04-05 14:09:57

Chapter 5 – The Whomping Willow Every year, this aged old hat, patched, frayed and dirty, sorted new students into the four Hogwarts houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin). 2025-04-06 14:18:13 Innumerable candles were hovering in mid-air over four long, crowded tables, making the golden plates and goblets sparkle. Overhead, the bewitched ceiling which always mirrored the sky outside, sparkled with stars. 2025-04-06 14:18:04 as the sun started to sink into their floor of cloud, staining it a deep pink. 2025-04-06 14:03:20 London was soon far behind them, replaced by neat green fields which gave way in turn to wide, purplish moors, villages with tiny toy churches and a great city alive with cars like multi-coloured ants. 2025-04-06 13:59:40 It was a different world. The wheels of the car skimmed the sea of fluffy cloud, the sky a bright, endless blue under the blinding white sun. 2025-04-06 11:35:26 He was looking forward to getting back to Hogwarts, but his month at The Burrow had been the happiest of his life. 2025-04-05 22:04:36

Chapter 6 – Gilderoy Lockhart ‘You could’ve fried an egg on your face,’ said Ron. ‘You’d better hope Creevey doesn’t meet Ginny, they’ll be starting a Harry Potter fan club.’ 2025-04-09 21:08:10 It was remarkable how he could show every one of those brilliant teeth even when he wasn’t talking. 2025-04-07 17:12:35

Chapter 7 – Mudbloods and Murmurs ‘Dirty blood, see. Common blood. It’s mad. Most wizards these days are half-blood anyway. If we hadn’t married Muggles we’d’ve died out.’ 2025-04-09 21:44:33 ‘An’ they haven’t invented a spell our Hermione can’t do,’ said Hagrid proudly, making Hermione go a brilliant shade of magenta. 2025-04-09 21:41:39

Chapter 8 – The Deathday Party ‘Trust me,’ said Ron. ‘We don’t want to be found here.’ 2025-04-15 21:12:36 ‘Shouldn’t we try and help –’ Harry began awkwardly. 2025-04-15 21:12:32 Rain was still lashing the windows, which were now inky black, but inside, all looked bright and cheerful. The firelight glowed over the countless squashy armchairs where people sat reading, talking, doing homework 2025-04-15 20:52:34 Amazed at his luck, Harry sped out of the office, up the corridor and back upstairs. To escape from Filch’s office without punishment was probably some kind of school record. 2025-04-15 20:47:13 Fred and George Weasley had an entire drawer to themselves. 2025-04-15 20:34:53 Chapter 9 – The Writing on the Wall What’s up?’ said Harry.‘I – don’t – like – spiders,’ said Ron tensely.‘I never knew that,’ said Hermione, looking at Ron in surprise. ‘You’ve used spiders in potions loads of times …’‘I don’t mind them dead,’ said Ron, who was carefully looking anywhere but at the window, ‘I just don’t like the way they move …’Hermione giggled. 2025-04-16 18:52:26

Chapter 9 – The Writing on the Wall I wouldn’t be in his house if you paid me. Honestly, if the Sorting Hat had tried to put me in Slytherin, I’d’ve got the train straight back home …’ 2025-04-16 18:48:52 Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago – the precise date is uncertain – by the four greatest witches and wizards of the age. The four school houses are named after them: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin. 2025-04-16 18:43:31 A Squib is someone who was born into a wizarding family but hasn’t got any magic powers. 2025-04-15 21:25:38 Innocent until proven guilty 2025-04-15 21:23:34 Much as he detested Filch, Harry couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for him, though not nearly as sorry as he felt for himself. If Dumbledore believed Filch, he would be expelled for sure. 2025-04-15 21:17:31

Chapter 10 – The Rogue Bludger But mostly, sir, life has improved for my kind since you triumphed over He Who Must Not Be Named. Harry Potter survived, and the Dark Lord’s power was broken, and it was a new dawn, sir 2025-04-17 22:47:52 Dobby can only be freed if his masters present him with clothes, sir. 2025-04-17 22:42:53 ‘This is all your fault,’ George said angrily to Wood. ‘“Get the Snitch or die trying” – what a stupid thing to tell him!’ 2025-04-16 19:56:48 ‘It’ll be down to you, Harry, to show them that a Seeker has to have something more than a rich father. Get to that Snitch before Malfoy or die trying, Harry, because we’ve got to win today, we’ve got to.’‘So no pressure, Harry,’ said Fred, winking at him. 2025-04-16 19:50:32 ‘I never thought I’d see the day when you’d be persuading us to break rules,’ said Ron. ‘All right, we’ll do it. But not toenails, OK?’ 2025-04-16 19:44:23 It was decorated with drawings of people halfway through transforming into other people. Harry sincerely hoped the artist had imagined the looks of intense pain on their faces. 2025-04-16 19:42:02

Chapter 11 – The Duelling Club ‘I spoke a different language? But – I didn’t realise – how can I speak a language without knowing I can speak it?’ 2025-04-21 15:56:15 Harry wasn’t sure what made him do it. He wasn’t even aware of deciding to do it. 2025-04-21 15:51:08 Who cares?’ said Harry and Ron together. 2025-04-21 15:39:54 If he doesn’t stop trying to save your life he’s going to kill you.’ 2025-04-17 23:02:51 Conjuring up portable, waterproof fires was a speciality of Hermione’s. 2025-04-17 23:00:09

Chapter 12 – The Polyjuice Potion Percy, who hadn’t noticed that Fred had bewitched his prefect badge so that it now read ‘Pinhead’, kept asking them all what they were sniggering at. 2025-04-21 17:39:13 Fred and George, however, found all this very funny. They went out of their way to march ahead of Harry down the corridors, shouting, ‘Make way for the heir of Slytherin, seriously evil wizard coming through …’ 2025-04-21 17:33:52 Harry didn’t mind; it made him feel better that Fred and George, at least, thought the idea of his being Slytherin’s heir was quite ludicrous. But their antics seemed to be aggravating Draco Malfoy, who looked increasingly sour each time he saw them at it. 2025-04-21 17:33:43

Chapter 14 – Cornelius Fudge ‘However,’ said Dumbledore, speaking very slowly and clearly, so that none of them could miss a word, ‘you will find that I will only truly have left this school when none here are loyal to me. You will also find that help will always be given at Hogwarts to those who ask for it.’ 2025-04-30 21:49:19

Chapter 18 – Dobby's Reward It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.’ 2025-05-01 22:39:13

CH1 The Boy Who Lived

1 He was tall, thin and very old, judging by the silver of his hair and beard, which were both long enough to tuck into his belt. He was wearing long robes, a purple cloak which swept the ground and high-heeled, buckled boots. His blue eyes were light, bright and sparkling behind half-moon spectacles and his nose was very long and crooked, as though it had been broken at least twice. This man’s name was Albus Dumbledore.(p9)

2 ‘It would be enough to turn any boy’s head. Famous before he can walk and talk!Famous for something he won’t even remember! Can’t you see how much better off he’ll be, growing up away from all that until he’s ready to take it?’(p14)

3 He couldn’t know that at this very moment, people meeting in secret all over the country were holding up their glasses and saying in hushed voices: ‘To Harry Potter – the boy who lived!(p18)

CH2 The Vanishing Glass

4 He rolled on to his back and tried to remember the dream he had been having. It had been a good one. There had been a flying motorbike in it. He had a funny feeling he’d had the same dream before.(p20)

5 Don’t ask questions – that was the first rule for a quiet life with the Dursleys.(p21)

6 As the snake slid swiftly past him, Harry could have sworn a low, hissing voice said, ‘Brazil, here I come … Thanksss,amigo.’(p30)

7 When he had been younger, Harry had dreamed and dreamed of some unknown relation coming to take him away, but it had never happened.(p31)

CH3 The Letters from No One

8 Yet here it was, a letter, addressed so plainly there could be no mistake: Mr. H. Potter The Cupboard under the Stairs 4 Privet Drive Little Whinging Surrey. (p36)

9 As night fell, the promised storm blew up around them. Spray from the high waves splattered the walls of the hut and a fierce wind rattled the filthy windows.(p48)

CH4 The Keeper of the Keys

10 Harry looked up at the giant. He meant to say thank you,but the words got lost on the way to his mouth, and what he said instead was, ‘Who are you?’ The giant chuckled. ‘True, I haven’t introduced meself. Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts.’(p52)

CH5 Diagon Alley

11 Harry scrambled to his feet, so happy he felt as though a large balloon was swelling inside him.(p66)

12 yet somehow, even though everything Hagrid had told him so far was unbelievable, Harry couldn't help trusting him.(p73)

13 ‘Bless my soul,’ whispered the old barman. ‘Harry Potter …what an honour.’ He hurried out from behind the bar, rushed towards Harry and seized his hand, tears in his eyes. ‘Welcome back, Mr Potter, welcome back.’(p74)

14 For some reason, the back of his neck prickled. The very dust and silence in here seemed to tingle with some secret magic.(p88)

15 The wand chooses the wizard, remember … I think we must expect great things from you,Mr Potter … (p92)

16 ‘Everyone thinks I’m special,’ he said at last. ‘All those people in the Leaky Cauldron, Professor Quirrell, Mr Ollivander … but I don’t know anything about magic at all.How can they expect great things? I’m famous and I can’t even remember what I’m famous for. I don’t know what happened when Vol– sorry – I mean, the night my parents died.’ ... ‘Don’ you worry, Harry. You’ll learn fast enough. Everyone starts at the beginning at Hogwarts, you’ll be just fine. Just be yerself. I know it’s hard. Yeh’ve been singled out, an’that’s always hard. But yeh’ll have a great time at Hogwarts – I did – still do, ’smatter of fact.’(p93)

CH6 The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

17 He didn't know what he was going to – but it had to be better than what he was leaving behind.(p104)

CH7 The Sorting Hat

18 The sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family within Hogwarts.(p122)

19 Harry had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles which were floating in mid-air over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting.(p124)

CH8 The Potions Master

20 There was a lot more to magic, as Harry quickly found out, than waving your wand and saying a few funny words.(p142)

21 Harry was very relieved to find out that he wasn't miles behind everyone else...There was so much to learn that even people like Ron didn't have much of a head start.(p144)

22 At the start-of-term banquet, Harry had got the idea that Professor Snape disliked him. By the end of the first Potions lesson, he knew he'd been wrong. Snape didn't dislike Harry-he hated him.(p145)

CH9 The Midnight Duel

23 ...and in a rush of fierce joy he realized he'd found something he could do without being taught-this was easy, this was wonderful.(p159)

24 Professor McGonagall peered sternly over her glasses at Harry. 'I want to hear you're training hard, Potter, or I may change my mind about punishing you.' Then she suddenly smiled. 'You father would have been proud.' She said. 'He was an excellent Quidditch player himself.'(p163)

CH10 Hallowe’en

25 The castle felt more like home than Privet Drive had ever done. His lessons, too, were becoming more and more interesting now that they had mastered the basics.(p183)

26 Hermione was the last person to do anything against the rules, and here she was, pretending she had, to get them out of trouble. It was as if Snape had started handing out sweets.(p191)

27 But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can't share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.(p192)

CH11 Quidditch

28 Out of the corner of his eye he saw the fluttering banner high above, flashing Potter for President over the crowd. His heart skipped. He felt braver.(p199)

CH12 The Mirror of Erised

29 Professor McGonagall had come round the week before, making a list of students who would be staying for the holidays, and Harry had signed up at once. He didn’t feel sorry for himself at all; this would probably be the best Christmas he’d ever had. (p209)

30 They sat by the hour eating anything they could spear on a toasting fork – bread, crumpets, marshmallows – and plotting ways of getting Malfoy expelled, which were fun to talk about even if they wouldn’t work.(p213)

31 Harry played with chessmen Seamus Finnigan had lent him and they didn’t trust him at all. He wasn’t a very good player yet and they kept shouting different bits of advice at him, which was confusing: ‘Don’t send me there, can’t you see his knight? Send him, we can afford to lose him.’(p214)

32 It shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts. ... However, this mirrow will give us neither knowledge or truth. Men have wasted away before it, entranced by what they have seen, or been driven mad, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.(p229)

33 It does not do so dwell on dreams and forget to live, remember that.(p230

CH13 Nicolas Flamel

34 He couldn’t ever remember feeling happier. He’d really done something to be proud of now – no one could say he was just a famous name any more.(p241)

35 Speaking quietly so that no one else would hear, Harry told the other two about Snape’s sudden, sinister desire to be a Quidditch referee. ‘Don’t play,’ said Hermione at once. ‘Say you’re ill,’ said Ron. ‘Pretend to break your leg,’ Hermione suggested. ‘Really break your leg,’ said Ron.(p233)

CH14 Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback

36 ‘What am I revising for? Are you mad? You realise we need to pass these exams to get into the second year? They’re very important, I should have started studying a month ago, I don’t know what’s got into me …’(p246)

CH15 The Forbidden Forest

37 The minutes dragged by. Their ears seemed sharper than usual. Harry’s seemed to be picking up every sigh of the wind, every cracking twig.(p274)

38 Over the rustling of the trees, he seemed to hear once more what Hagrid had told him on the night they had met: ‘Some say he died. Codswallop, in my opinion.Dunno if he had enough human left in him to die.’(p278)

CH16 Through the Trapdoor

39 Losing points doesn’t matter any more, can’t you see? D’you think he’ll leave you and your families alone if Gryffindor win the House Cup? If I get caught before I can get to the Stone, well, I’ll have to go back to the Dursleys and wait for Voldemort to find me there. It’s only dying a bit later than I would have done, because I’m never going over to the Dark Side! (p290)

40 ‘I’ll use the Invisibility Cloak,’ said Harry. ‘It’s just lucky I got it back.’ ‘But will it cover all three of us?’ said Ron. ‘All – all three of us?’ ‘Oh, come off it, you don’t think we’d let you go alone?’(p291)

CH17 The Man with Two Faces

41 ‘To one as young as you, I’m sure it seems incredible, but to Nicolas and Perenelle, it really is like going to bed after a very, very long day. After all, to the well-organised mind, death is but the next great adventure. (p320)

42 ‘Call him Voldemort, Harry. Always use the proper name for things. Fear of a name increases fear of the thing itself.’(p320)

43 ‘The truth.’ Dumbledore sighed. ‘It is a beautiful and terrible thing, and should therefore be treated with great caution. (p321)

44 'Your mother died to save you. If there is one thing Voldermort cannot understand, it is love. ... to have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection for ever.(p321)

45 ‘First – to Mr Ronald Weasley …’ ‘… for the best-played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in many years, I award Gryffindor house fifty points.’ ‘Second – to Miss Hermione Granger … for the use of cool logic in the face of fire, I award Gryffindor house fifty points.’ ‘Third – to Mr Harry Potter …’ said Dumbledore. The room went deadly quiet. ‘… for pure nerve and outstanding courage, I award Gryffindor house sixty points.’ ‘There are all kinds of courage,’ said Dumbledore, smiling.‘It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr Neville Longbottom.’(p328-329)

46 It was the best evening of Harry’s life, better than winning at Quidditch or Christmas or knocking out mountain trolls … he would never, ever forget tonight.(p330)
